This is Kayla -NOW!

She is UNSTOPPABLE.

During those 6 years in that "home", my brother and I also suffered sexual abuse. "Tina" got pregnant towards the end of the 6 years and decided that they were done with us, so they undid the adoption. We went back into the foster care system when I was 9 and moved around from home to home in different towns in Montana. Thankfully they kept my brother and me together.

We ended up in Billings in our first "black" home when I was 12. My brother was so happy to be in a home full of boys and everyone looked like us. The family had an older son that wasn't supposed to be there and he ended up molesting me one night.

I turned him in and I was removed.

That was the only time I was without my brother. We were separated for just under a week.

We then moved into a home that wasn't like any of the others. They were a young couple who had a few kids of their own and could see right through everything that we had been through and were trying to hide from.

They truly saved us, I don't know what would have happened if we had not moved in with them. That was 18 years ago and I still call them mom and dad.

My brother though, was so much older when everything happened; he remembered things more than I did, and healing wasn't as easy for him.

He started drinking, joined the military and just struggled to stay sober. After he discharged from the marines, he moved to WY to be near the VA hospital. He wanted to get better. He knew it was something that would take a lot of work and he wanted to be able to help others in his situation.

He knew he could relate in a way no one else could and I was so happy for him.

One night he and his roommate had a few drinks and went to bed. Due to a freak accident, their house caught on fire and my brother never made it out.

You [Kristen Adkins] asked me how I survived, how I stayed so normal and the answer is very clear to me.

I am who I am because God gave me the two best guardian angels anyone could have.

My brothers both lost their lives way before they should have because they spent what little time they had on earth making sure I was ok. They are the reason I am the way I am, the reason I choose to fight and be better and stay strong each and every day. Because I'll be damned if I'll let their lives be lost for nothing.

She has overcame and so can you....

Impressing Minds is about creating value in the mind of a child through the foster parents. Imagine the mind of a child being made of play-doh, and you are about to make a permanent impression. What type of impression will you make? I will encourage you to make a soft, lasting, affirmative impression in their mind by giving tools to get started fostering, accomplishing a great foster care home, and serving the children in your care. I offer support to you and others fostering. An important element of Impressing Minds is the support that others have given to those in need.
